A Shout of Triumph
Those who witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus saw His hours of agony and heard Him cry out from the cross in a loud voice, “It is Finished!” as He died. (John 19:30) Was His final words from the cross a painful defeat? Absolutely not! This was “A Shout of Triumph”. Jesus had accomplished all that the Father had sent Him to do.
When Jesus died that dark day in Jerusalem, He shared in what all of us must one day experience. However, He did what none of us can do. He paid the price for our sins that we might be forgiven and have eternal life through faith in Him.
“It is Finished!” was the Lord’s shout of victory because now through Him we can escape the power of sin. Jesus said that He had come to do God’s will and to finish the work of the Father. He came to save sinners from their sins. On the cross Jesus triumphantly proclaimed that His work was finished. And, because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us, we call the day of His death “Good Friday”.
