Who Are You?

“Who are you?”  That was the question of the day.

We’d arrived at our family reunion, and as one who had lived away, I had not seen some in my extended family for many years.  I don’t have any idea how many times I answered, and usually, it wasn’t enough.  The second question of the day which was much more defining, was, “Who’s child are you?”  They wanted to know whose child I was in order to know just how I fit into the family.

Spiritually, we need to know who we are and to whom we belong!  First, the Word makes it clear that it is through His love that we become a child of God.  Perhaps the most quoted verse in the Bible, John 3:16 says that it is through Christ’s death on the cross and our belief in Him that we are saved and become a part of the family of God.  In 1 John 3:1, we are reaffirmed of our place in His family, made possible through His love, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1John 3:1 NKJV).  Further, John 1:12 says, “…as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.  Even on the days when we feel less certain about who we are, or to whom we belong, He provides His own witness in our spirit (Romans 8:16).  He whispers deep within our soul that we belong to Him.

Today, meditate on who you are and to whom you belong.  Remember that you are a part of the family of God, a child by “new birth”, having been bought with the sacrifice of God’s son, finding forgiveness and eternal belonging through Him.
