Timeless Treasure
Easter brings back memories of new Sunday clothes, baskets of artfully colored eggs straight from the kitchen, and more chocolate in my woven Easter basket than I got the rest of the year!! The Easter egg hunt was always filled with excitement as I ran from tree to tree, staining my pants with new green grass while grabbing hidden treasures as quickly as I could.
Though these are memories that I treasure, there’s a greater treasure that I remember each Easter that means so much more. It is the completion of Holy Week with the death of Jesus on the cross for our sins and his resurrection from the dead. The resurrection proves that Jesus is the Son of God, our sins are truly forgiven, all His teachings are true, and we who believe will live with Him for eternity.
This is a far better gift than a new set of clothes, a basket of chocolate treats, or an Easter egg hunt with friends. It is a gift that will not fade away with passage of time. Unlike those childhood treasures that have long since been gone, Easter’s gift is eternal. The Apostle John wrote that God loved the world, sending his only son that we might believe in Him, and through that belief inherit eternal life (John 3:16). With a hallelujah, we celebrate our eternal treasure!
